it | en | sequoie schema | There is a third member of the Redwood family confirmed by DNA studies, the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). The species was considered extinct 2 million years ago until 1948 when the existence of living Dawn Redwood in China was confimed. It grows up to 60 m and is endangered in the wild: there is only one big stand of 5,000 trees. In 1995 in North Carolina a project was started to create another stand of 1,000-5,000 trees. | ![]() |
